Behaviour of biological & financial predators. Jungle law.

When people tell you that "The Internet Is a Jungle," they are often unaware of how much truth there is in that statement. The World Wide Web is an evolving system, not a product of conscious design. Please use your imagination while I illustrate some incidences where simple jungle law is an extremely good guide to the Internet and affiliate marketing. I had to learn many of these lessons the hard way but this is the theme of all the pages on my web site

If you remove biological predators from an ecosystem, it upsets the balance of nature. Flight animals and other species that are normally the hunted, loose their survival skills. If food is plentiful, they become fat and lazy. Man is a predator and the hunter gatherer instinct drives us all to compete for a higher position in the natural pecking order. Financial predators are a necessary evil. It is essential to understand their behaviour if you do not want your business venture to get gobbled up with the small fry. The word predator can be applied to those whose behaviour is not within the bounds of normality. Pedophiles have been described as sexual predators but there are better words to describe these people who are often criminals and or psychopaths. I use the word predator to describe the natural instincts that are present in all members of the human race.

Many of nature’s predators form close family ties and bonds with humans. Our cats, dogs and other companion animals are example of loving and trusting predators. They are driven by natural social instincts. They strive to pass on their hunting and survival skills to members of their family group including the humans, with whom they have formed close bonds. I had a very dominant, territorial cat that developed a neurotic habit which the vet described as obsessive grooming. She groomed herself and my other cats in an obsessive manner and she tried to groom me, when I wore any perfume. If I sat down or went to bed with a trace of perfume, her instinct told her to wash it off my skin, so that my smell would not attract the attention of larger predators.

There is no need to mistrust all Internet users, who offer you free products and services to help you build your business. The majority are doing what they are biologically programmed to do, to pass on their skills to the next generation . I have listed a number of free services that I use and strongly recommend. I have very vivid memories of learning about predators who try to impart their knowledge of hunting to friendly humans. I learned this lesson when I was about eight years old.

My older brother dashed into my bedroom, when he heard me screaming in the middle of the night. He looked at the largest headless rat he had ever seen. He searched for the cat that had deposited the carcass on my pillow, in order to make a huge fuss of it. He dumped the body in a shoe box and tried to explain that Ginger was trying to teach me to catch rats. That did not console me but my brother was anxious to get back to his own bed, so he told me something that he knew would console me. He said that it would be a good idea for me to send the dead rat to The King and ask him if he would mention Ginger in the New Year’s Honours List. I was thrilled with the idea. I packed the parcel up and wrote a letter saying something like “Dear King George. I am sending you the rat that my cat Ginger caught. My brother Peter says you will give Ginger a title for his services to ratting, when you see it. He thinks that you should make Ginger “Lord Ginger of the Barn.” My brother forgot to give me any money to post the parcel so I asked my mother to post it. She was not amused!

Television wildlife programmes have made it possible for all of us to identify with natural predators as family groups or as individuals that hunt alone. I watched a wildlife documentary and I was able to identify with an old hippopotamus cow. The safari guide took the tourists to a riverbank and warned them to stand back and be extra cautious. He knew the hippopotamus that occupied the territory very well and warned them, that she was old and very aggressive. She had been pushed out of a comfortable large territory to an area where there was a limited supply of food and space for her to wallow. She felt threatened by anybody or anything that wanted to share her diminishing assets. I watched her and realised that I was becoming like her, doing what I could to make a comfortable home in a space that was smaller than my family home had been. I could identify with that poor old cow. I become just as agitated as she does, when my assets appear to be diminishing or depreciating. She was also an inspiration to me, as she was a survivor, who would fight to preserve what she had earned and valued during the course of a hard life.

Try to think of your first faltering steps on the World Wide Web as a trip into a biological jungle. If you were going into the rainforest, your first move would be to visit the doctor and learn more about the bugs, worms and other harmful critters, which could damage your health. You would probably accept his or her advice on sensible precautions. Your computer needs similar diagnostic and remedial skill, if it is going to survive in a hostile environment. A successful business needs a mix of active and passive managers and workers. Many online programme managers are only interested in recruiting self-starters. This is because most new projects and enterprises started by individuals with an autocratic management style achieve the best short-term results. Businesses run by people with a democratic management style succeed in the medium and long term. The Rate of Change

The rate of change on the Internet is mind boggling. What does the term mean? You can sum it up in a single word CALCULUS. If you are not familiar with the basic principles of calculus, don’t think about it! Picture the markets with which you are familiar, in your mind’s eye and adapt to the rate of change in that small niche. If you adapt your business will survive. If you can not change your business will suffer the same fate as the dinosaurs. Some people have the art of pacing themselves more evenly than others and this makes it easier to adapt. Others adapt but they create stress among team members, which is why personalities capable of acting as stress absorbers are an essential part of any successful team.

If you find that the rate of change is driving you crazy, you are not alone. Email and web pages are a new form of communication, servers go down, malicious pests deposit unwanted messages in your mailbox and unwholesome images on your screen. Internet users become angry and sparks fly. Some systems and users blow a fuse. This is inevitable. There is nothing that you can do other than to try and keep you cool and retain your sense of humour. Only posterity will be able to describe the effect that the Internet’s second decade has had on the human race. If you are capable of shutting down the computer, when there appear to be mysterious gremlins lurking in your brains or your PC’s silicon chips, you will adapt to the rate of change. Your subconscious will sort the matter out and you will be able to return to your work with renewed vigour.
